ICON-D2 or ICON-EU: which model when?

02Die ICON-Familie

ModellGebietGitterweiteReichweite
ICONganze Erdeca. 13 kmbis 7,5 Tage
ICON-EUEuropaca. 6,5 kmbis 5 Tage
ICON-D2Deutschland, Alpenraum und Nachbarländerca. 2,2 kmbis 2 Tage

The German Weather Service (DWD) runs several weather models multiple times a day. If you know how they differ, you can weigh their results properly.

01What a weather model does

A numerical weather model divides the atmosphere into a three-dimensional grid and calculates how pressure, temperature, humidity and wind develop at every grid point. The grid spacing determines what the model can see: anything smaller than a few grid points has to be simplified.

02The ICON family

ModelAreaGrid spacingRange
ICONwhole globeapprox. 13 kmup to 7.5 days
ICON-EUEuropeapprox. 6.5 kmup to 5 days
ICON-D2Germany, the Alps and neighbouring countriesapprox. 2.2 kmup to 2 days

The DWD adjusts runs and ranges from time to time. Current details are on dwd.de.

03ICON-D2: the detail model

With a grid spacing of about 2.2 km, ICON-D2 represents valleys, ridges and lakes much more accurately. Above all, it calculates deep convection (cumulus clouds, showers and thunderstorms) directly instead of just estimating it. It is rerun every three hours. There is also an ensemble (ICON-D2-EPS) that uses slightly varied starting conditions to show how certain a forecast is.

Best for: today and tomorrow, thermals, thunderstorms, local winds in the mountains.

04ICON-EU: the overview

ICON-EU is coarser, but looks further ahead and covers all of Europe. It has to parameterise convection, meaning it estimates it with simplified assumptions. For the large-scale situation, fronts, pressure patterns and foehn tendencies it is still very reliable.

Best for: days two to five, planning, the overall weather pattern.

05Rules of thumb

  • Today and tomorrow: ICON-D2 first, ICON-EU as a cross-check.
  • From the day after tomorrow: ICON-EU and global ICON, plus ensembles for the uncertainty.
  • Compare several runs: if the forecast stays stable from run to run, it is more reliable. If it jumps around, the situation is uncertain.
  • Even 2.2 km is coarse: a narrow valley or a single ridge falls through the grid. Local knowledge remains irreplaceable.
Remember

When two models disagree, that is not an error but information: the atmosphere has not made up its mind yet.

FlyableDay uses ICON-D2 and ICON-EU and prepares both for paraglider pilots.
